cows Fescues Toxicosis Alert

Cases of tall fescue toxicosis and ryegrass staggers are caused by two different endophyte toxins in hay, straw, pellets and grass seed screening pellets used as livestock feed. The Oregon State University (OSU) Endophyte Service Laboratory is observing higher levels of endophyte toxins in samples of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass analyzed this year compared to previous years. There are also more clinical cases this year.

Be on alert for cases of fescue toxicosis and ryegrass staggers in livestock caused by toxin contaminated hay, straw, or pellets produced from the 2009 grass seed crop. This is especially true during the winter months as colder weather exacerbates the endophyte's toxic effects. Forage from 2009's crop should be tested for toxin levels before using as livestock feed. Once tested, toxicity may be avoided by diluting the toxic feed with an endophyte-free forage.

Information about sample submission is available at web site http://oregonstate.edu/endophyte-lab/
