Eighteenth annual Agriculture Progress Awards salutes industry leaders

Oregon agriculture will salute industry leaders this month at the eighteenth annual Agricultural Progress Awards Dinner to be held at the Oregon Garden in Silverton, March 16. The event, hosted by the Oregon Department of Agriculture and held during National Agriculture Week, celebrates progress in agriculture made through partnerships between business, higher education, and state government. 

ODA Director Katy Coba will present awards in recognition of innovation and leadership in the following areas:

Outstanding Cooperator: The Northwest Food Processors Association, for its collaboration with ODA and others in such areas as food safety, energy, and transportation.

Excellence in Conservation:  Jerry Erstrom of Vale, for his work in the Willow Creek Restoration Project and other efforts to improve water quality and efficiency in the region.

Chef of the Year:  Leif Eric Benson, executive chef of Timberline Lodge, for his innovation and promotion of Oregon agricultural products with a focus on the Oregon potato.

Excellence in Education:  Oregon Public Broadcasting, for its television production of The Silent Invasion, a documentary which has raised public awareness of invasive species.

Excellence in Marketing:  Certified Onion, Inc. of Malheur County, a non-profit organization of onion shippers, which is using ODA certification services to assure food safety.

Individual Contributions to Agriculture:  John McDonald of Hillsboro, for his long time and extensive work with Oregon's soil and water conservation districts; Nick Furman of Coos Bay, executive director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, for his leadership and promotion of the state's seafood and dairy industries; and, Thayne Dutson of Sisters, recently retired Dean of Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Director of the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station.

The Agricultural Progress Awards Dinner will be held Tuesday, March 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the pavilion at the Oregon Garden, 879 West Main Street, in Silverton, preceded by a no-host social hour and reception at 5:30 p.m.
