--ORDER TODAY--
Did you know that our great State of Oregon is turning 150 years old on February 14, 2009? It’s true! And one of the ways that Oregonians are marking this landmark anniversary is by reading. In 2009 all Oregonians are encouraged to read at least one of three books. Each book and a brief synopsis of the plot is listed below.
In addition to reading one, or all, of the Oregon Reads books, local libraries will be hosting an array of events including book talks, discussion groups, webcasts, podcasts, online chats, and even chances to meet the authors!
In order to ensure that you’ll have your copy of one of these great books in time for all of the fun, take a minute to order your copies today. Below, you will find an order form that lists descriptions of each book. All three books will be available in either Cassette, Braille, WebBraille, or UNABRIDGED downloadable audio!
You are welcome to order one of each title, but please be advised that our copies of Braille are limited, so you might have a short wait for your selection. Cassette copies will be widely available with no wait.
TBABS plans to begin distributing the books in their various formats in December 2008. Events in your local area should run between January and April 2009.

Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler (adult reading level)
A factual account of three generations of a Japanese-American family living in the Pacific Northwest. The story begins in 1903, when Masuo Yasui arrives in Hood River, Oregon to seek his fortune. With the rise of anti-Japanese sentiment around 1919, Yasui and his family must sacrifice much to maintain their success in the community. This all changes after December 7, 1941 when Yasui is arrested as a spy and imprisoned for the rest of the war. His relatives are scattered and some are interned in camps. Stubborn Twig puts a human face on the events on the events surrounding Japanese internment during World War II.

Bat 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff (young adult reading level)
All of the girls of Barlow and Bear Creek Ridge have been waiting for their turn at Bat 6 since they could first toss a ball. This time there’s a newcomer on each team: Aki, at first base for the Ridgers, who just returned with her family from a place she’s too embarrassed to talk about, and Shazam; center field for Barlow who’s been shunted around by her mother since her father was killed on December 7, 1941. Both girls are on a collision course that explodes catastrophically on the morning of Bat 6; the day they’ve been preparing for all their lives.

Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson (children’s level)
