Condensing Furnaces and Boilers and Air Handlers for hydronic systems
|
A furnace qualifies for a tax credit of $350 if it meets the following minimum requirements:
- Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is 90 percent or higher (Systems installed after Jan. 1, 2009 must be 92% AFUE or higher.
- Use ducted outdoor air for combustion (Models that can be installed using either inside or outside combustion air should indicate on the final invoice that the installation was outside combustion air ("two-pipe"), including furnaces and boilers installed in garages.)
- The air handler blower motor must have an electronically commutated, permanent magnet variable speed DC (ECPM) motor (Effective January 1, 2009, the model be listed in the Gas Appliance Manufacturers' Directory as electrically-efficient (the "e" symbol)
A boiler qualifies for a tax credit of $225 if it meets the following minimum requirement:
- Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 88% (Starting January 1, 2009, must be 92 percent or higher).
- (Starting January 1, 2009) Systems must be installed with an outdoor thermostat/reset control; listed on final invoice.
If you purchase a new qualifying furnace or boiler, having premium efficiency ducts will add a $150 tax credit. Applications for the qualifying furnace or boiler and the premium ducts must be submitted at the same time to qualify for the additional tax credit.
An air handler qualifies for a $125 tax credit if it meets the following minimum requirements:
- Installed as part of a hydronic space heating system
- Equipped with an electronically commutated, permanent magnet variable speed DC (ECPM) motor (Models that have integral heat recovery or energy recovery ventilation capability will receive an additional $225 credit.)
Please note: Installation of the above equipment does not need to be performed by a Department of Energy tax credit-certified technician.
"Combo" Space and Water Heating Systems
|
Premium efficiency combination ("combo") space and water heating systems consist of a qualifying water heater or boiler that serves both the domestic hot water needs and provides heat through a coil in an air handler, or directly through hydronic baseboard heaters or in-floor radiant heat.
If a premium efficiency water heater is the source of heat, apply for the tax credit on the basis of the efficiency of the water heater. The tax credit is the amount listed for qualifying water heater models or 25 percent of the purchase price, whichever is less.
If a premium efficiency boiler is the source of heat, apply for the tax credit using the form for qualifying furnaces, boilers and air handlers. At the present time, there is no tax credit for a passive water storage tank (sometimes called an indirect water heater) that might be installed in such a system.
If an air handler is installed to distribute the heat via forced air, as part of a “combo” system, a separate tax credit is possible for qualifying air handlers (Qualifying Furnaces, Boilers, Air Handlers).
